Why Font Licensing Matters

Font licensing is just as important as trademarking the name of the House.
Licensed fonts matter because they legally protect the brand.
Like software licenses, fonts are treated as intellectual property, so using a typeface without the correct commercial license can carry risks leading to copyright infringement and take down requests.
Legal Protection for the Brand

For Vinciani it was important that the correct licenses were purchased to cover the usage of the fonts, ensuring both the visual identity and the legal compliance of the brand.
Understanding License Agreements

Another important step, was understanding and reading the license terms and conditions, so the brand remained fully compliant with how the fonts are allowed to be used on print.
Adobe Creative Cloud Licensing

With font licensing being crucial, Vinciani’s fonts are covered under a valid commercial license through Adobe Creative Cloud.
As a subscriber to Adobe Creative Cloud, this was a valuable asset to have, as it gave me the flexibility in usage of the fonts for the brand.
Supporting Independent Font Foundries

For the long term I also believed it was important to make the decision of purchasing commercial licenses directly from third-party foundries.
This did two things:
It supported the designers who created the typefaces.
It future proofed typography as a brand licensed asset.

Using a dual approach helped to eliminate gaps in font licensing.
Protecting the House

Just like trademarking, licensing the fonts was part of the broader strategy of safe guarding the brand.
It made me understand that font licensing matters just as much as trademarking does, and keeping records of your licenses safe are just as important part of brand building.
The House is still being built.
